Leadership is “organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal”.
The leader may or may not have any formal authority.
Students of leadership have produced theories about how to be great at leading.
Be a Great Leader
A great Nigerian leader is a person who people willingly follow.
A person who is honest, influential, has a vision, is inspiring, understands, is motivated by positive intentions, can persuade (and doesn’t manipulate), is willing and able to guide or direct others.
Seems like quite a list of traits, however, these are just some that differentiate effective managers from truly influential leaders.
“Influential” Nigerian Leadership Development
Want to know what I believe is one of the biggest challenges with leadership, not just in Nigeria, but also in many countries around the world?
“It isn’t ‘corruption,’ because while you may want to believe Nigeria holds the top position in that category, and while it is indeed a big problem, Nigeria is not the leader in corruption.”
I’ve been blessed to have traveled to other continents, and have been amazed at how corruption works as part of the fabric of society…and yes, even in countries considered to be ‘developed,’ it’s still the same thing either on a grander scale or less noticeable until someone gets caught with their hand in the cookie-jar!
But I digress…
Leadership is one of those things that tends to be difficult to define. However, you definitely know when it’s missing and you also know it when you see it and feel it.
It’s one of those life and business areas about which a lot is said, while at the same time, leaving big questions unanswered.
Who Exactly Is an Influential Leader?
One question I often get asked is whether you can you take someone that’s not a “natural leader,” probably a great and effective manager, and transform them into an influential leader?
The answer is “Yes.”
There are considerations, but if those are in place, then anyone can lead.
But of you were to look at the state of leadership in Nigeria you’d be forgiven if you thought that the great country is incapable of producing people who can operate at world-class and industry leading levels.
I know it’s possible because I’ve worked alongside people in this category and I’ve also coached and mentored women and men from different backgrounds, of different colors, belief systems, cultures, age groups, social positions, political inclinations and anything you can imagine.
“The difference has nothing to do with where they’re coming from – It’s about where they are headed.”
The approach we use is to conduct leadership events where effective managers and ordinary everyday leaders (most times leaders because of their job title or rank within the organization) are able to develop the insights and practical skills needed to become influential leaders people want to follow.
Our solutions and events stretch each and every delegate to gain their own personal insight into what makes them tick. With the achievement of that understanding of themselves, they’re then able to stretch the boundaries of what’s comfortable for them as an individual.
“Coupled with this, we then work with them to focus on their ability to see and understand exactly what they need to do in order to move from being and effective manager, to an influential leader.”
Without a doubt, this is the one key quality that any person in any position of leadership has to develop.
It doesn’t matter whether you run a company, run a community organization or you run a home, it’s impossible for you to excel if you can’t experience things from different perspectives.
As soon as you’re in a position to see what’s going on for others, it’s only then that you’re able to proceed with developing all the other essential leadership skills.
